Free ACT Skills Guide: The Six Core Skills

Six ACT skills. In plain language you can actually use.

From an ACT Coach. Not therapy, a practical starting point for everyday personal development.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy was built as a clinical treatment, and it remains one. This guide takes the same six skills and applies them to everyday personal development: the stalled decision, the pattern you know isn't serving you, the gap between the life you want and the one your avoidance keeps maintaining.

It's not therapy, and it isn't a substitute for clinical care if what you're carrying is genuinely clinical. It's a practical, honest starting point for everything else.

The six skills inside

Each one loosens the grip a thought or feeling has on your behaviour, from a different angle.

Skill 01

Acceptance

Making room for a difficult feeling instead of needing it to leave before you act.

Skill 02

Cognitive Defusion

Noticing a thought as a thought, not as an instruction you have to obey.

Skill 03

Being Present

Coming back to now, instead of a rehearsed future or a replayed past.

Skill 04

Self-as-Context

Finding the steadier part of you that notices the feeling, rather than being consumed by it.

Skill 05

Values

Getting specific about what actually matters to you. A compass, not a checklist.

Skill 06

Committed Action

Where the other five cash out. Doing the thing, with the feeling still present.

Want the bigger picture first?

If ACT is new to you, What Is ACT Therapy? covers the basics, and ACT vs CBT explains how it differs from the approach most people have heard of. The ACT hub shows how I use it in a coaching context.

Values and committed action run right through The Self Blueprint, so if one skill in this guide turns out to be your growth edge, that's where we go deeper on it.
