Stage 1: Concept of Self and I Am Statements

Foundation. Understanding the Levels of Self.

This is the cornerstone of the whole programme. You will get a clear idea of what your Concept of Self is, and how it has been controlling your life.

Stage 1 of 8

This is where the whole thing starts. And here's why it pays to learn from someone who has been through this process before: I know exactly where you're going to get stuck. Knowing that will save you a lot of time, frustration and stress working it out alone.

We start at the core of all your challenges: your Concept of Self. How you created it. And the three levels that control the way your life unfolds.

Most people have never consciously observed themselves. They've reacted, responded, performed, but never stopped to look at the operating system running underneath it all. Foundation is that first look. It's not always comfortable. But it is necessary. And the gold lies in the places you're not yet prepared to go.

"This is the cornerstone of the whole programme. You will get a clear idea of what your Concept of Self is, and how it has been controlling your life."

The science

Relational Frame Theory (Hayes, Barnes-Holmes and Roche, 2001) explains that our I Am Statements are not isolated thoughts. They form connected webs of meaning, each one reinforcing the next. The I Am Statements you carry became fused with your sense of self so gradually you never noticed it happening. That's exactly what Foundation makes visible.

What you work through in Stage 1.

Your Concept of Self, surfaced

Through the I Am Statements and I Am Evaluations process, you surface the exact language your subconscious has been using to define you. These are more than words. They are the architecture of how you've been experiencing everything.

The three levels of self

Level 1: your Concept of Self, the story-version of you. Level 2: your ongoing process of awareness. Level 3: the Observing Self, the part of you that watches, clear and conscious. This is where real change becomes possible.

How your belief system was programmed

You'll uncover how easily your belief system was built, often without any conscious awareness it was happening. Knowing the mechanism is the first step to changing it.

The Story you created

Learn how you created a Story by building relational frameworks in your subconscious mind, and how that Story became the identity you've been living inside.

Awareness as the starting point

Once you can see how you got here, you can start moving toward the person you want to become. That's what the next seven stages are built for.

The exercises in Stage 1.

Ex 1

Your I Am Statements

The raw, unfiltered self-concept: surfacing the language running underneath your experience.

Ex 2

Your I Am Evaluations

The deeper judgements, assessments and stories beneath the statements: the fused beliefs.

Ex 3

I Am Reflections

Sitting with what emerged, from the observer position, not inside the story.

Try it now

Ten I Am Statements in ten minutes.

You don't need the whole programme to get a taste of this. You need ten minutes, a pen and a bit of honesty.

  • Step 1. Find a quiet spot. Phone face down. Take a few slow breaths, in for about five seconds, out for about five.
  • Step 2. At the top of a page, write "I am…". Then finish the sentence ten times, as fast as you can. Don't think. Don't edit. Whatever turns up goes on the page. "I am tired." "I am the reliable one." "I am not good with money." All of it.
  • Step 3. Read the list back slowly. Next to each one, put a + if it feels true and kind, a – if it feels true and heavy, and a ? if you're not sure where it came from.
  • Step 4. Pick the one with the most charge, the one that made your stomach drop a little. Ask: whose voice is this? When did I first hear it?

You're not trying to change anything yet. You're looking. Believe me, most people are surprised by what's sitting on that page. That surprise is where Stage 1 begins.
